Helping Kids Succeed

POSTED ON
April 09

For most of my adult life, I have advocated for children.  My top priority has been to better public education and ensure every child, no matter his or her zip code, has an equal opportunity to learn and thrive.

This past session of the Maryland General Assembly, I worked hard advocating for a Pre-K Expansion Grant Program that has the potential to include an additional 1,600 children from low income families in voluntary half or full-day prekindergarten programs.  Prekindergarten programs have been proven to raise reading ability of children and dramatically increase their chances of high school graduation. I'm so happy to say that the Governor signed the bill into law just yesterday!

This expansion is only the beginning to offer a fair start to our kids.  In a recent study completed by theEquality of Opportunity Project, Baltimore was listed as one of the worst cities in America in which to be born poor.  Due to a number of reasons, especially surrounding inadequate education, children born in poverty in Baltimore have almost a 94% chance of dying that way.  Despite these findings, nearly 60% of Maryland's three to four-year olds are still ineligible to attend public Pre-K.

As your Delegate, I will worker harder than anyone else to ensure ALL of our kids have the opportunity to attend high-quality Pre-K programs.  All kids deserve a good start in life.

Thanks always for your support!

The Feb. 25 filing deadline has passed. With the contenders in the June 24 election now set, it appears this year’s Democratic primaries to fill the Baltimore seats in the Maryland General Assembly will be highly competitive; and due to the recent legislative redistricting, dramatically different from past campaign seasons.

One of the Baltimore state senators who is unchallenged is 40th District Sen. Catherine Pugh.
